Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of verse 2.231:
अन्वाख्यानस्मृतौ ये च प्रत्ययार्था निबन्धनम् ।
निर्दिष्टार्थ (ष्टास्ते) प्रकृत्यर्थाः स्मृत्यन्तर उदाहृताः ॥ २३१ ॥anvākhyānasmṛtau ye ca pratyayārthā nibandhanam |
nirdiṣṭārtha (ṣṭāste) prakṛtyarthāḥ smṛtyantara udāhṛtāḥ || 231 ||231. Those very meanings of suffixes which are taught as their basis in some school of grammar are taken as belonging to the stem (or root) in some other school.
Commentary
[The Vṛtti says that some grammarians looked upon all suffixes as svārthika, that is, they do no more than manifest the meaning of the prakṛti, root or stem:—tathā hi keṣāṃ cit smartṛṇām sarva eva pratyayāḥ svārthikāḥ prakṛtyarthānuvādina ityākhyāyante.]
