Description of the photo

This is the sculpture of a female musician holding the Nadaswaram. She seems to be taking a breath after playing the Nadaswaram. The right leg is straight and the left leg is in front Svastika. Gives an insight into the presence of female musicians as early as 1000 years back. Her hair is tied into a bun giving an idea of prevalent hairstyles during those days.

Kumbakonam is considered as one of the holiest places in Tamil Nadu and is known for its temples and Mathas (monasteries which were centres of Brahmanical learning). These photographs depict the connection between the sculptures in the temples and Natya Shastra and related texts dealing with iconography.
