Saṃsārahetu (संसारहेतु) refers to the “cause of saṃsāra”, according to the fourteenth chapter of the Ahirbudhnyasaṃhitā, a Pāñcarātra work in 60 chapters dealing with topics such as Viṣṇu’s discus-power, the processes of creation and esoteric practices related to Sudarśana (such as mantras and yantras).—Description of the chapter [jīvasya saṃsārahetutaduddhāraṇaprakāravarṇanaṃ]: Nārada accepts this, but wants to know why most people in this world seem bound to a cycle of rebirth; is there no escape for them? (1-5). Śiva points out that it is the will (icchā) of Viṣṇu Himself that manifests itself eternally—without beginning and with no foreseeable end—and since the jīvas are parts of Viṣṇu they, too, will continue endlessly and eternally to go the round of births and deaths (6-10a).
