This page describes further details of the mountain chains which is verse 3.13 of the English translation of the Tattvartha Sutra which represents the essentials of Jainism and Jain dharma and deals with the basics on Karma, Cosmology, Ethics, Celestial beings and Liberation. The Tattvarthasutra is authorative among both Digambara and Shvetambara. This is verse 13 of the chapter The Lower World and the Middle World and includes an extensive commentary.

Verse 3.13 - Further details of the mountain chains

Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of Tattvartha sūtra 3.13:

मणिविचित्रपाद्म उपरि मूले च तुल्यविस्ताराः ॥ ३.१३ ॥

maṇivicitrapādma upari mūle ca tulyavistārāḥ || 3.13 ||

Studded with various jewels, the sides of these mountains are variegated and the mountains are of equal width at the foot, in the middle and at the top. (13)

Hindi Anvayarth:

अन्वयार्थ: इन पर्वतों का तट चित्र-विचित्र मणियों का है और ऊपर-नीचे तथा मध्य में एक समान विस्तार वाला है।

Anvayartha: ina parvatom ka tata citra-vicitra maniyom ka hai aura upara-nice tatha madhya mem eka samana vistara vala hai |

Explanation in English from Ācārya Pūjyapāda’s Sarvārthasiddhi:

Being studded with precious stones of different colours and lustre, the sides of these mountains are variegated. The words ‘upari’, etc., are intended to exclude unwanted shapes. ‘Ca’ is intended to include the middle. The breadth is the same at the foot, in the middle and at the top.
