Manavatti (wife)
The term ‘Manavatti’ means wife[1] and it was referred to in inscriptions of Chola period. A lithic record mentioned that Peruman porri, Manavatti (wife) of Nerkuppai Udaiyan gifted a land for a lamp to the temple of Chaturvedimangalam.[2] Another lithic record recorded a gift of a lamp to the Perumal Temple by a lady, the wife of a native of Kadapperi[3] Another one inscription identified the name of a woman Kaveribinakam,the wife of Puliyan alias Solamarayan of Karunguzhi.[4] A lithic record from Vadapathi denoted a gift of land after purchase by Kanamperuman, the wife of Sembiyan, for the perpetual lamp in the temple of Sri Brahmapureeswarar.[5]
A lithic record from Palayanur referred Nakkan Tiru Nillakandi wife (Sikamani) of Mela Madevan Tuki Narayanan had donated 100 pon for Thirumanjanam and providing food to god.[6] Another lithic record from Athiyur mentioned about the gift of 15 Kalanju of gold for a lamp by Raman Perral wife (mamagal) of Singan Kesavan.[7] Another inscription from Puliparkoil, seems to referred to some gift made to the deity by dancing girl.[8] This information from inscriptions revealed that the women of this period had also more interest in devotion to god and endowed much to the temple.
