In the depiction of Balarama in the act of consoling a common man, perhaps a wood-cutter or a villager, two points need notice (fig. 36). First it is the differential treatment of the dress, ornamentation and physical features, between a person of higher and lower stratum of a society. Secondly, is the duty of the affluent class to look after and console their people, who are in distress. It may also hint that the strict compartmentalized caste restrictions, has not yet emerged in the Pallava period.
