The Buddha is addressed bhante and Bhagava by the upasakas, and they salute (abhivadeti) him, and, before leaving, circumambulate. A poor worker (daliddo kammakaro), who is an upasaka is addressed as avuso in one notable instance by the Buddha. This poor man instance by the Buddha. This poor man has been described by the text without the mentioning of his name. Buddha seems to have elevated his status by calling him avuso. As the story goes, this man borrows money in order to give a sumptuous meal to the Buddhist monks and this is the reason why he is addressed as avuso.[1]
