Part 5j - Alaṃkāra (10): Dṛṣṭānta or exemplification
Dṛṣṭānta or exemplification is the reflective representation of a similar subject.[1] In the verse, vinā na sāhityavidā[2] ……, it has been mentioned that only a connoisseur is the knower of the magnanimity of a poem, just as the drops of oil spreads on water only, not on others. Here, there is bimbapratibimabhāvaḥ between the upamāna and the upameya. Hence, the example under discussion, is an illustration of the figure Dṛṣṭānta. Some other examples are—sūktau śucāveva pare[3]……, kāvyaṃ ya eva gahanaṃ[4] ……., no śakya eva parihṛtya[5] ……, vācāṃ vakrimapaddhatiḥ[6] ….,avihitabṛhattattcchāstrakramopaniṣacchrame[7] … ….
