This page relates ‘Concept of Karman (Introduction)’ of the study on Karmic Astrology and its presentation in Vedic and the later Sanskrit literature. Astrology (in Sanskrit: Jyotish-shastra) is based upon perceptive natural phenomenon of cosmic light forms while the Concept of Karman basically means “action according to Vedic injunction” such as the performance of meritorious sacrificial work.

Karman designates action and carries a comprehensive character in the literature.
Derivation of the term (Karman)
The term Karman (n) is derived from the √kṛ which means to do, make, perform, accomplish, cause, effect, prepare.[1] In compounds it becomes Karma.
Meaning of the term (Karman)
Karman or Karma chiefly means action (kriyā), work (kārya), deed (kṛtya).[2] In its phase wise development in the literature, it comes in the sense of a religious rite, duty, moral duty, fate and such meanings all in accordance with the changeable connotations of action.
Origin in the Literature
The term occurs in the Ṛgveda in the sense of ‘doing’.[3] It also appears as a ‘good deed’ (sukṛta).[4]
