Atharvaveda and Charaka Samhita

This page relates ‘Signs and Omens in the Caraka-Samhita’ found in the study on diseases and remedies found in the Atharvaveda and Charaka-samhita. These texts deal with Ayurveda—the ancient Indian Science of life—which lays down the principles for keeping a sound health involving the use of herbs, roots and leaves. The Atharvaveda refers to one of the four Vedas (ancient Sanskrit texts encompassing all kinds of knowledge and science) containing many details on Ayurveda, which is here taken up for study.

Signs which indicate death in six months are as follows: patient with no active inclination; conduct memory, sacrifice, intellect & strength; prominent network of blood vessels appearing on the forehead; appearance of crescent-shaped streak all over the four-head. Signs indicating death within a month are as follows–tremors in body, stupor, movements, &speech like insane; semen, urine & stool sinking in water; swelling up only the extremities and face; failure to identity his own people or attendants; dislike for physician, medicines, food, preceptor and friends etc.

Auspicious signs in the patient louse are family members & patient behaving respectfully, favourable signs; abundance of materials and wealth.

Good dreams are dreaming of climbing house, palace, hill; riding of elephant, bull, horse; seeing the moon, sun, sun, fire, lactating women; while flowers; journey to the east and north; rising after fall etc[1].
