This page relates ‘Chardi (vomiting) according to Caraka’ found in the study on diseases and remedies found in the Atharvaveda and Charaka-samhita. These texts deal with Ayurveda—the ancient Indian Science of life—which lays down the principles for keeping a sound health involving the use of herbs, roots and leaves. The Atharvaveda refers to one of the four Vedas (ancient Sanskrit texts encompassing all kinds of knowledge and science) containing many details on Ayurveda, which is here taken up for study.

Maharṣi Caraka discusses disease of Chardi and treatment of Vomiting and Chardicikitsā. Due to vāta, pitta, kapha and Sannipāta and due to contact with disgusting things are produced five types of Chardi. The premonitory symptoms of Chardi are as follows: Nausea, excessive salivation, and hateful disposition towards food. There are five types of Chardi, namely, Vātika chardi (caused by vāyu), Paittika chardi (caused by pitta), Khapaja chardi (caused by kapha), Sānnipātika chardi (caused by all three doṣas), and Dviṣṭārtha-yogaja-chardi (caused by the contact unwanted objects). If vomitus contains faeces, and urine, associated with cough, dyspnoea and thirst, then he is incurable. If severe vomiting in a weak person, associated with blood and pus, then he is incurable. If Vomiting which has no complications, then he is curable.

The general treatment of Chardi includes lightening measures and evacuative measures. Regarding the diet of Chardi patients it has been said: old rice, wheat, snake-gourd, guḍūcī, butter-milk, roots of Citraka. Use of formulations to cures of this disease, namely, Kalyāṇa-Ghṛta, Tryūṣaṇa-Ghṛta and Jīvanīya-Ghṛta, juice of Āmalakī, etc.[1]
