Yoga-sutras (with Bhoja’s Rajamartanda)

by Rajendralala Mitra | 1883 | 103,575 words

The Yoga-Sutra 3.46, English translation with Commentaries. The Yogasutra of Patanjali represents a collection of aphorisms dealing with spiritual topics such as meditation, absorption, Siddhis (yogic powers) and final liberation (Moksha). The Raja-Martanda is officialy classified as a Vritti (gloss) which means its explanatory in nature, as opposed to being a discursive commentary.

Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of Sūtra 3.46:

रूपलावण्यबलवज्रसंहननत्वानि कायसम्पत् ॥ ३.४६ ॥

rūpalāvaṇyabalavajrasaṃhananatvāni kāyasampat || 3.46 ||

46. Colour, loveliness, might, and adamantine hardness constitute the excellence of the body.

The Rajamartanda commentary by King Bhoja:

[English translation of the 11th century commentary by Bhoja called the Rājamārtaṇḍa]

[Sanskrit text for commentary available]

He next explains what excellence of the body is—

[Read Sūtra 3.46]

“Colour, loveliness, and might” are well-known. “Adamantine hardness” (vajrasaṃhananatva) means that hardness is produced in one’s body like that of the diamond. These are the excellences that become manifest in the body.

Notes and Extracts

[Notes and comparative extracts from other commentaries on the Yogasūtra]

[While yearning for the severance of all bondage to worldly objects, the Yogīs cannot get over the natural love which ties the mind to the body. The body is one's own, and it is always desirable to have it in a perfect state of beauty, and the means are here provided to give it perfection. Of course it is introduced here as the effect of a particular kind of Saṃyama, and not as a thing to be desiderated.]

Having thus explained the excellence of the body, he now describes the conquest of the organs by one who has attained his (proper) stage.
