Yoga-sutras 4.32, English translation with modern and ancient interpretation. The Patanjali Yogasutras describe an ancient Indian tradition spanning over 5000 years old dealing with Yoga:—Meditating the mind on the Atma leading to the realization of self. This study interprets the Yogasutras in light of both ancient and modern commentaries (e.g., Vyasa and Osho) while supporting both Sankhya and Vedanta philosophies.

Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of sūtra 4.32:

ततः कृतार्थानां परिणामक्रमसमाप्तिर्गुणानाम् ॥ ४.३२ ॥

tataḥ kṛtārthānāṃ pariṇāmakramasamāptirguṇānām || 4.32 ||

(32) After the emergence of that (virtue-pouring cloud) the guṇas having fulfilled their purpose, the sequence of their mutation ceases.

Ancient and Modern interpretation:

The mutation of guṇas have fulfilled two purposes of bhoga and apavarga and their sequence of mutation terminate with that.

Osho says,

“Having fulfilled their object, the process of change in the triguṇas comes to an end.”

The fish realizes the importance of ocean only when it is thrown out of it. Fish is otherwise not aware of the ocean when he lives and dies in it. Similarly, miseries lead us to the divine truth.

Taimni explains,[1] here the outcomes of attaining kaivalya are given. Also, nature of exalted condition of consciousness and freedom from limitations in which self realized puruṣa lives is explained. Of course, only the yogī who has attained kaivalya can understand this condition.
