Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of verse 3.14.486:
कृष्णादिव्यपदेशश्च सर्वावयववृत्तिभिः ।
गुणैस्तेऽप्येकदेशस्थाः पटादीनां विशेषकाः ॥ ४८६ ॥kṛṣṇādivyapadeśaśca sarvāvayavavṛttibhiḥ |
guṇaiste'pyekadeśasthāḥ paṭādīnāṃ viśeṣakāḥ || 486 ||486. Epithets like black are applied when the quality (blackness) pervades all the parts. Sometimes, they are used as qualifiers of objects like a piece of cloth when the quality in question is found in a part only.
Commentary
[It has already been stated that quality words can be applied to objects irrespective of their size. Normally, of course, an epithet like ‘black’ is applied to an object when all its parts are black. Sometimes, however, even when only a part of it is black, the whole is called black, especially to exclude objects which are not even partly black.]
