Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of verse 3.14.397:
सामान्यं श्यामताद्येव तद्धि साधारणं द्वयोः ।
तदेव सिद्ध्यसिद्धिभ्यां भेद इत्यपदिश्ते ॥ ३९७ ॥sāmānyaṃ śyāmatādyeva taddhi sādhāraṇaṃ dvayoḥ |
tadeva siddhyasiddhibhyāṃ bheda ityapadiśte || 397 ||397. It is darkness etc. which is the common attribute and it is common to two things and that is also the difference between the two, being well-known in one and not well-known in the other.
Commentary
[In the M. Bhā. on P. 2.1.55, it has been said that sāmānya does not stand for the universal which inheres in a very large number of individuals but other less pervasive attributes. That which exists in two things only is also sāmānya. See M. Bhā. I. p. 398, II.16-17. Darkness exists in śastrī as well as in Devadattā and so it is sāmānya. In the former it is well-known and in the latter, it is not. That is the difference.]
