Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of verse 3.14.354:
अपृथक्।छब्दवाच्यस्य जातिराश्रीयते यदा ।
द्रव्यस्य सति संस्पर्शे तदा जातिपदार्थता ॥ ३५४ ॥apṛthak|chabdavācyasya jātirāśrīyate yadā |
dravyasya sati saṃsparśe tadā jātipadārthatā || 354 ||354. If the universal is emphasised even though substance, not conveyed by a separate word, may be touched upon, the universal is the meaning of the word.
Commentary
[Even according to the view that the word conveys both the universal and the substance, the emphasis may be on one more than on the other. In the sentences : brāhmṇāh [brāhmaṇāh?] śuśrūṣayitavyāḥ, yo'yaṃ pānīyain pibati sa gauḥ padā na spraṣṭavyaḥ, gaur anubandhyaḥ, the emphasis is on the universal. So the number of the word should not be taken seriously.]
