Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of verse 3.14.247:
द्रव्यधर्मानतिक्रान्तो भेदधर्मेष्ववस्थितः (ष्वशक्तितः) ।
भविष्यदाश्रयापेक्षे लिङ्गसङ्ख्ये प्रपद्यते ॥ २४७ ॥dravyadharmānatikrānto bhedadharmeṣvavasthitaḥ (ṣvaśaktitaḥ) |
bhaviṣyadāśrayāpekṣe liṅgasaṅkhye prapadyate || 247 ||247. Not being beyond gender and number, the properties of a substance, and being in apposition to what expresses the particular, it (the bahuvrīhi) takes on the gender and number of the particular relatum which is going to be connected with it.
Commentary
[As the bahuvrīhi conveys substance in general, it is susceptible to gender and number, properties of substance. But it is not capable of taking on any particular gender and number belonging to an individual substance: Therefore, by P. 1. 2. 52. it takes on the gender and number of the individual substance conveyed by the word used in apposition to it.]
