Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of verse 3.14.241:

सम्बन्धिनि निमित्ते तु द्रव्यधर्मो न हीयते ।
लिङ्गाभावो हि लिङ्गस्य विरोधित्वेन वर्तते ॥ २४१ ॥

sambandhini nimitte tu dravyadharmo na hīyate |
liṅgābhāvo hi liṅgasya virodhitvena vartate || 241 ||

241. If the relata are the basis of the formation, the property of individual substance is not interfered with. It is having no gender at all which is opposed to having gender.

Commentary

[According to the veiw that the relata are the basis of the formation and that the expressed meaning is the relatum susceptible to take gender and number, there would be need for the extension of gender and number by P. 1.2.52. In this view, even if the basis of the formation (nimitta) persists, it would do no harm to the property of substance, namely, susceptibility to gender and number, because the nimitta also is so susceptible. Even though the gender and number of the nimitta in citraguḥ (feminine and plural) are different from those of the meaning of the other word Devadattaḥ (masculine and singular), the former would not eclipse the latter. So the latter would have its own gender and number. If bare relation were the basis of formation, it would convey the relatum without giving up its own form. So the relatum would be eclipsed by the relation and would not get its own gender and number. To have no gender at all is opposed to having a gender and not having a different gender.]
