Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of verse 3.1.63-64:
एकेन चेत्प्रसिद्धायां क्रियायां यदि सम्भवात् ।
पश्वन्तरमुपादेयमुपादानमनर्थकम् ॥ ६३ ॥
यथैवाहितगर्भायां गर्भाधानमनर्थकम् ।
तथैकेन प्रसिद्धायां पश्वन्तरमनर्थकम् ॥ ६४ ॥ekena cetprasiddhāyāṃ kriyāyāṃ yadi sambhavāt |
paśvantaramupādeyamupādānamanarthakam || 63 ||
yathaivāhitagarbhāyāṃ garbhādhānamanarthakam |
tathaikena prasiddhāyāṃ paśvantaramanarthakam || 64 ||63. When the act has been accomplished with one animal, if one takes another merely because it is possible to do so, such an act would be useless.
64. Just as it is useless to sow the seed in a woman in whom it has already been sown, in the same way, it would be useless to resort to another animal when the act has been completed with one.
Commentary
[The sacrifice is complete when one animal has been sacrificed. By sacrificing more than one animal the sacrificer is not likely to get any extra fruit. Thus, it is simpler to say that the singular number is significant.]
Others give some other reason than simplicity for considering the singular number to be significant.
