Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of verse 2.166:
ये शब्दा नित्यसम्बन्धा विवेके ज्ञातशक्तयः ।
अन्वयव्यतिरेकाभ्यां तेषामर्थो विभज्यते ॥ १६६ ॥ye śabdā nityasambandhā viveke jñātaśaktayaḥ |
anvayavyatirekābhyāṃ teṣāmartho vibhajyate || 166 ||166. The meaning of those words whose relation with meaning is eternal and whose power to denote their meaning has been understood by analysis, can also be understood by agreement and difference.
Commentary
[Words and their meanings are analysed by the method of anvaya and vyatireka. That is, recurrent parts of the meaning are ascribed to recurrent parts of the word.]
