Text 10.203 [Viṣama]

क्वचिद् यद् अतिवैधर्म्यान् न श्लेषो घटनाम् इयात् ।
कर्तुः क्रिया-फलावाप्तिर् नैवानर्थश् च यद् भवेत् ||10।126||
गुण-क्रियाभ्यां कार्यस्य कारणस्य गुण-क्रिये |
क्रमेण च विरुद्धे यत् स एष विषमो मतः ||10।127||

kvacid yad ativaidharmyān na śleṣo ghaṭanām iyāt |
kartuḥ kriyā-phalāvāptir naivānarthaś ca yad bhavet ||10.126||
guṇa-kriyābhyāṃ kāryasya kāraṇasya guṇa-kriye |
krameṇa ca viruddhe yat sa eṣa viṣamo mataḥ ||10.127||

kvacit—in regard to something; yat—if (yat = yadi) (or which idea: yat = yad vastu); ativaidharmyāt—because of a huge dissimilarity; na—not; śleṣaḥ—the connection; ghaṭanām—a [logically sound] connection; iyāt—attains; kartuḥ—of the doer; kriyā—of the action; phala—of the result; avāptiḥ—the obtainment; na eva—never; anarthaḥ—an unwanted thing (“not the goal”); ca—and; yat—if; bhavet—happens; guṇa-kriyābhyām—with the quality and the effect; kāryasya—of the effect; kāraṇasya—of the cause; guṇa-kriye—an quality and an action; krameṇa—respectively; ca—and; viruddhe—are incompatible; yat—if; saḥ eṣaḥ—that very one; viṣamaḥ—the ornament called viṣama; mataḥ—is considered.

Viṣama (disparity) has four varieties:
(1) the connection between two entities is as if incongruous owing to a huge disparity,
(2) an endeavor becomes useless and a reverse, unwanted result occurs,
(3) a quality of the effect is the opposite of a quality of the cause,
(4) an action of the effect is the opposite of an action of the cause.

dvayor ativailakṣaṇyād yad aghaṭita iva yogaḥ syāt, yac ca kriyāyāḥ praṇāśād abhīṣṭaṃ tat phalaṃ na syāt, pratyutānarthaś cānabhīṣṭaḥ prāpnuyāt, yac ca kārya-kāraṇa-gatayor guṇayoḥ kriyayor vā mitho virodhaḥ sa catur-vidho viṣamaḥ.
