vyavahitārtha-pratītikaṃ kliṣṭam. śrīvāsa-janma-bhūdābhāñ jaghāna danujān vibhuḥ. atra śrīvāsaḥ padmaṃ taj-janma-bhūr jalaṃ tad-do meghas tad-ābhān iti kliṣṭam.

(14) The fault named kliṣṭa (hard to understand) occurs when the perception of the meaning is hindered. For instance: śrīvāsa-janma-bhū-dābhāñ jaghāna danujān vibhuḥ, “Vibhu killed the cloud-like demons.” Here the compound śrīvāsa-janma-bhū-dābhān is hard to understand: śrīvāsa (lit. the residence of Lakṣmī) means a lotus, the place of its birth (janma-bhū) is water, that which gives water (janma-bhū-da) is a cloud; they were like clouds.

Commentary:

This literary fault (kliṣṭa) and the next two only occur in a compound (7.2 vṛtti). A compound is classed as a pada (one declined word).
