by Śrī Śrīmad Bhaktivedānta Nārāyana Gosvāmī Mahārāja | 2005 | 440,179 words | ISBN-13: 9781935428329

The Brihad-bhagavatamrita Verse 2.4.102, English translation, including commentary (Dig-darshini-tika): an important Vaishnava text dealing with the importance of devotional service. The Brihad-bhagavatamrita, although an indepent Sanskrit work, covers the essential teachings of the Shrimad Bhagavatam (Bhagavata-purana). This is verse 2.4.102 contained in Chapter 4—Vaikuntha (the spiritual world)—of Part two (prathama-khanda).

Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration, Word-for-word and English translation of verse 2.4.102:

श्री-वैकुण्ठ-वासिन ऊचुः— मैवं सम्बोधयेशेशां मा च सङ्कीर्तयेस् तथा ।
उपश्लोकय माहात्म्यम् अनन्तं त्व् अद्भुताद्भुतम् ॥ १०२ ॥

śrī-vaikuṇṭha-vāsina ūcuḥ— maivaṃ sambodhayeśeśāṃ mā ca saṅkīrtayes tathā |
upaślokaya māhātmyam anantaṃ tv adbhutādbhutam || 102 ||

śrī-vaikuṇṭha-vāsinaḥ ūcuḥ–the residents of Vaikuṇṭha said; –do not; evam–in this way; sambodhaya–address; īśa-īśam–the Lord of lords; –do not; ca–and; saṅkīrtayeḥ–you should sing loudly; tathā–in this way; upaślokaya–offer praise in Sanskrit verses; māhātmyam–glories; anantam–limitless; tu–indeed; adbhutaadbhutam–the most amazing of all that is amazing.

The residents of Śrī Vaikuṇṭha said: Our master is the Supreme Lord of all lords. You should not address Him by saying, ‘O Kṛṣṇa, O Gopāla!’ Do not sing His glories in this manner. He has unlimited astonishing glories. Sing these in verses and measured stanzas.

Commentary: Dig-darśinī-ṭīkā with Bhāvānuvāda

(By Śrīla Sanātana Gosvāmī himself including a deep purport of that commentary)

The Vaikuṇṭha residents say, “The Lord is the supreme controller of even Brahmā and the other demigods. Therefore, do not keep calling out to Him, ‘O Kṛṣṇa, O Gopāla!’ It is especially inappropriate to address Him by directly taking His name. Do not sing or perform saṅkīrtana of the Lord’s Gokula childhood pastimes in His presence. Rather, in nicely composed verses, you should sing about the Lord’s extraordinary glories, which are unlimited and thoroughly marvelous.”
