This is a description of an "Elephant Lamp" (Sinhala: Eth Pahana) made by King Parakramabahu I in the 12th century.

ඇත් පහණ—මෙහි ඇත්තේ පළමුවන පරාක්‍රමබාහු රජතුමා විසින් කළ දැනට දැදිගම ප්‍රදේශයේ පිහිටි කොටවෙහෙරෙන් හමු වු ඇත් පහණෙහි අනුරුවකි. (ක්‍රි.ව.1153 - 1186)

තිරයක අග තෙල් දැවී ක්‍රියාකෙරෙන පහණක් සඳහා, තෙල් දැවෙන තිරයූ අග සහ තෙල් බඳූනේ තෙල් මට්ටම අතර උසෙහි එතරම් වෙනසක් නොතිබිය යුතුය. මේ උස වැඩිවුවහොත් තිරය දිගේ තෙල් ඇදී ඒම නැවතී පහන් තිරය දැවීයනු ඇත. එහෙත් තෙල් සෑහෙන පමණ ගබඩා කෙරුමට නම් බඳූනේ සෑහෙන උසකට තෙල් දැමිය යුතුයි. එවිට බඳූනේ තෙල් මට්ටම පහළටයත්ම තිරය දැවීයනු ඇත. ඒ අනුව තෙල් මට්ටම එතරම් පහළට නොයන පරිදි විශාල තෙල් ප්‍රමාණයක් එකවර දැමිය හැකි පහණක් නිමැවීම දුෂ්කර කාර්යයකි. මේ දුෂ්කර කාර්යය ඉතා විශිෂ්ඨ ලෙස, කලාත්මකව විසඳා ඇති අයුරු ඇත් පහණෙන් පෙනේ.

æt pahaṇa—mehi ættē paḷamuvana parākramabāhu rajatumā visin kaḷa dænaṭa dædigama pradēśayē pihiṭi koṭaveheren hamu vu æt pahaṇehi anuruvaki. (kri.va.1153 - 1186)

tirayaka aga tel dævī kriyākerena pahaṇak sandahā, tel dævena tirayū aga saha tel bandūnē tel maṭṭama atara usehi etaram venasak notibiya yutuya. mē usa væḍivuvahot tiraya digē tel ædī ēma nævatī pahan tiraya dævīyanu æta. ehet tel sǣhena pamaṇa gabaḍā kerumaṭa nam bandūnē sǣhena usakaṭa tel dæmiya yutuyi. eviṭa bandūnē tel maṭṭama pahaḷaṭayatma tiraya dævīyanu æta. ē anuva tel maṭṭama etaram pahaḷaṭa noyana paridi viśāla tel pramāṇayak ekavara dæmiya hæki pahaṇak nimævīma duṣkara kāryayaki. mē duṣkara kāryaya itā viśiṣṭha lesa, kalātmakava visandā æti ayuru æt pahaṇen penē.

tirayaka aga tel davi kriyakerena pahanak sandaha, tel davena tirayu aga saha tel bandune tel mattama atara usehi etaram venasak notibiya yutuya. me usa vadivuvahot tiraya dige tel adi ema navati pahan tiraya daviyanu ata. ehet tel sahena pamana gabada kerumata nam bandune sahena usakata tel damiya yutuyi. evita bandune tel mattama pahalatayatma tiraya daviyanu ata. e anuva tel mattama etaram pahalata noyana paridi vishala tel pramanayak ekavara damiya haki pahanak nimavima dushkara karyayaki. me dushkara karyaya ita vishishtha lesa, kalatmakava visanda ati ayuru at pahanen pene.

For a screen-end oil-burning lamp, there should not be much difference in height between the end of the screen-burning oil and the oil level in the oil pan. If this height is increased, the oil will stop flowing along the screen and burn the lamp screen. But in order to store enough oil, the oil should be put in the pan to a high level. Then when the oil level in the pan goes down the screen will burn. Accordingly, it is a difficult task to make a lamp that can put a large amount of oil at once so that the oil level does not go too low. It can be seen that this difficult task has been solved in an excellent and artistic way.

These photos were taken at the Tissamaharama Raja Maha Vihara situated in Sri Lanka, which includes a large Stupa that can be seen from afar. The whole complex is an ancient Buddhist temple which can be dated to the 3rd century BC. According to Theravada traditions, the site was visited by the historical Buddha who meditated at the Tissamaharama Stupa together with 500 Arhats (one who has achieved spiritual enlightenment).
