There is a painting of Durga on the wall outside the Garbha Graha. She is Caturbhuja, front right hand holding Abhaya Hasta, front left hand holding Trisula, back right hand is holding Ankusa and back left hand is holding Pasa. She is standing in Avahittha Sthana. Her left leg is straight and unbent and her right leg is at ease. Behind her is the Simha.

Kumbakonam is considered as one of the holiest places in Tamil Nadu and is known for its temples and Mathas (monasteries which were centres of Brahmanical learning). These photographs depict the connection between the sculptures in the temples and Natya Shastra and related texts dealing with iconography.
