Description of the photo

An Apsara holding a parrot. Her Siras is turned to right side, Parsva is Nata on right and Samunnata on left, Urah [uras] is in Nirbhugnam [Nirbhugna], Kati is in Udvahita on right. Right leg is absolutely straight, Uru is in Stambhana, Janu and Pada are in Sama. Left leg is in front Svastika. Left Pada is in Agratala, left Jangha is in Avartita. Cannot identify any Cari or a Karana.There is a masculine figure of a Rsi near her leg on right side.

Kumbakonam is considered as one of the holiest places in Tamil Nadu and is known for its temples and Mathas (monasteries which were centres of Brahmanical learning). These photographs depict the connection between the sculptures in the temples and Natya Shastra and related texts dealing with iconography.
