Description of the photo

This is a beautiful sculpture of a dancing lady or a Dasi holding a Camaram [Camara]. She is standing in Ayata Sthana, her waist is raised in Udvahita on the right side, she is in Abhanga posture, Siras, Parsva and Urah [uras] are all Sama. Right hand is holding a Camaram [Camara] whereas her left hand is kept on Uru. Her hair is knotted into a bun on the left side and her jewellery and dress creases are clearly visible. Cannot identify any Cari or Karana.

Kumbakonam is considered as one of the holiest places in Tamil Nadu and is known for its temples and Mathas (monasteries which were centres of Brahmanical learning). These photographs depict the connection between the sculptures in the temples and Natya Shastra and related texts dealing with iconography.
