Source: Shodhganga: a concise history of Sanskrit Chanda literatureVāsuṇṇi (वासुण्णि) or Vāsuṇṇi Mussat (1855-1914 C.E.) alias Vāsudeva Śarman of Vellānasseri family of Kuttūr, Kerala was an eminent scholar of Sanskrit Literature. He studied under Kuññuṇṇi Mūssat alias Śaṅkaran Mūssat (1827-1888) of Kilakke Puram in Kerala. He was also collaborated with Punaśśeri Nīlakaṇṭha Śarman and Mānavikrama Eṭṭan Tampurān. He was also the contemporary of Karuttapāra Dāmodaran Nambūtiri and Maṇantala Nīlakaṇṭha Mūssat.
Chandas (छन्दस्) refers to Sanskrit prosody and represents one of the six Vedangas (auxiliary disciplines belonging to the study of the Vedas). The science of prosody (chandas-shastra) focusses on the study of the poetic meters such as the commonly known twenty-six metres mentioned by Pingalas.
