Source: What is India: Annual Report on Indian Epigraphy (1945-1952)Uphuṇasi is an archaeologically important site situated in Hangal-taluk (Dharwar district), known for inscriptions regarding the ancient history of India. For example, at Uphuṇasi there is a Slab set up in the compound of the Kalleśvara temple which registers gifts of land to the temple and to the educational institution attached to it (maṭha) by Kundabbarasi who was associated in the administration with her husband mahāmaṇḍaleśvara Kundarāja who is described as lord of the foremost town of Banavāsi Sattigana chaṭṭa and son of Irivabeḍaṃgadeva and governing the province of Bana-vāse-12000 as far as Payve-nādu. This inscription belongs to king Jagadekamalla Jayasiṃgadeva of the Western Chālukya dynasty and is dated Śaka 950 (1028 A.C., December 23).
