Tathāgatamata (ತಥಾಗತಮತ):—[noun] Buddhism, a religion founded by Gautama Buddha in India in 6th century b.c. (and later spread to China, Burma, Japan, Tibet, and parts of southeast Asia), holding that suffering in life caused by unabated desire can be overcome through enlightenment and self-denial which enable one to escape from endless sequence of births and deaths to which all beings are otherwise subject.
