rumāla (रुमाल).—m ( P) A handkerchief, a towel, any square piece of cloth (for wrapping round the head, or for tying up articles). 2 A budget or bag of papers of accounts. 3 Applied to the cloth which is waved before kings and nobles. 4 A flag or cloth waved in indication of yielding or of soliciting a truce. v phirava, uḍava. 5 A grant of land to the dēśapāṇḍyā or kuḷakaraṇī. (So named from the rumāla or daphatara of which these officials are the custodians.)
