Pātālavakatra (पातालवकत्र) refers to the “face called the lower world”, according to the Ṣaṭsāhasrasaṃhitā, an expansion of the Kubjikāmatatantra: the earliest popular and most authoritative Tantra of the Kubjikā cult.—Accordingly, “The face called the Lower World (pātālavakatrapātālākhyaṃ tu yad vaktraṃ) is on the path below. It is all bliss, secret, omniscient, and facing everywhere. It generates the six-fold path (of the universe). It is all things, the place where death arises (as well as) the seed and womb of the universe. It is the abode of the mother, the secret energy. That current is the lord Akula who, in order to emanate the universe, conceives his own imperishable Self to be Śakti”.
