Paryastāpahnuti (पर्यस्तापह्नुति) refers to one of the 93 alaṃkāras (“figures of speech”) mentioned by Cirañjīva Bhaṭṭācārya (fl. 17th century) in his Kāvyavilāsa and is listed as one of the 89 arthālaṃkāras (figure of speech determined by the sense, as opposed to sound).

Cirañjīva has furnished a definition of paryastāpahnuti in Kāvyavilāsa. It runs thus—“paryastāpahnutiryatra dharmimātraṃ niṣidhyate”.—“When a substance but not its property is denied, it is called the figure paryastāpahnuti”. Though Cirañjīva has generally followed the treatment of Jayadeva, he has deferred from Jayadeva in the case of defining paryastāpahnuti. In Jayadeva’s opinion when the property of a substance is denied it is the figure paryastāpahnuti.

Example of the paryastāpahnuti-alaṃkāra:—

kṛpārāmakṣonīpatiyaśasi śasvatsvamahasā—’navadyenā”vidyotayati jagatīmadya sahasā |
sudhādhāmetyevaṃ sphuritamapi rākāniśi paraṃ kalaṅkenā’laṃ kaḥ kalitamamumantaḥ kalayati ||

“The world being enlightened in all sides by the unimpeachable, everlasting power of the fame of kṛpārāma, the lord of earth who is to take this as moon smeared with scars in the full-moon day”.

Notes: In this verse the everlasting fame of Kṛpārāma has been glorified. When the fame of Kṛpārāma is enlightening the earth as the moon, who dares to take the lunar orb, which is imprinted with scar as the moon. Here denying the moon, the actual substance, the fame of Kṛpārāma has been taken as the moon. So it is an example of paryastāpahnuti-alaṃkāra.
