1. To appoint, designate, ordain, institute, assign, appropriate; உத்தியோகம் முதலியவற்றில் அமர்த்து தல். [uthiyogam muthaliyavarril amarthu thal.]

2. To resolve, determine; தீர்மானித்தல். இடமுங் காலமும் நியமித்து [thirmanithal. idamung kalamum niyamithu] (தொல். பொ. [thol. po.] 3, உரை [urai]).

3. To consecrate, dedicate, devote; சங்கற்பஞ்சாங்கம் செய்தல். [sangarpagn seythal.] (W.)

4. (Grammar) To make a rule imperative when, along with other rules, it is merely optional; ஓரிடத்திற் பலவிதிகள் நிகழுநிலை யில் ஒன்று அல்லது சிலவே வரும் என்று வரையறுத் தல்.
