A motherly or matronlike person in general. 2 Used in construction with ōḷakhaṇēṃ-jāṇaṇēṃ-mānaṇēṃ- pāhaṇēṃ &c. (signifying To know, recognize, regard, or hold as in the place of one's mother or other inviolable relation) on occasions of affirming or of enjoining pure sentiment towards some ward or charge committed, or some person or thing subsisting in connection.
