Mantrivirodha (मन्त्रिविरोध) refers to “quarrel amongst princes”, according to the Bṛhatsaṃhitā (chapter 17) (“On planetary conjunctions—grahayuddha”), an encyclopedic Sanskrit work written by Varāhamihira mainly focusing on the science of ancient Indian astronomy astronomy (Jyotiṣa).—Accordingly, “The conjunctions of the planets are of four sorts known technically as—1. Bheda, 2. Ullekha (ullekhayuddha), 3. Aṃśumardana, 4. Asavya, according as the planets are more and more distant from each other, as stated by Parāśara and other Ṛṣis. [...] If the planets should be in Ullekha conjunction there will be wars in the land and princes will quarrel with their enemies (mantrivirodha), but there will be abundance of good food; [...]”.
