Shilpashastra (iconography)
Source: Shodhganga: Vaisnava Agamas And Visnu ImagesKūcabandha (कूचबन्ध) refers to a type of “decorative band” (bandha), as defined in treatises such as the Pāñcarātra, Pādmasaṃhitā and Vaikhānasa-āgamas, extensively dealing with the technical features of temple art, iconography and architecture in Vaishnavism.—Kūcabandha or Stanabandha mean “band on the breasts”. The function of these particular bands, worn sometimes by the Goddesses and female icons, is to keep the breast firm especially in case of fighting icons. According to Rao: “Hindus are forbidden by the rule of Dharmaśāstra from wearing stitched clothes. Hence arose probably the practice of women employing this kūcabandha”. This can be noticed in the icon of Śrīdevī under study in the Government Museum, Chennai.
Shilpashastra (शिल्पशास्त्र, śilpaśāstra) represents the ancient Indian science (shastra) of creative arts (shilpa) such as sculpture, iconography and painting. Closely related to Vastushastra (architecture), they often share the same literature.
