Source: archive.org: Shiva Purana - English TranslationKaruṇāsāgara (करुणासागर) refers to the “ocean of mercy”, and is an epithet of Śiva in the Śivapurāṇa 2.2.16. Accordingly as Brahmā narrated to Nārada:—“[...] O sage, when we were asked by Śiva thus, I, the grandfather of the worlds, spoke to Lord Śiva on being prompted by Viṣṇu: [...] O great lord, lord of Devas, O lord, the ocean of mercy (Karuṇāsāgara), please listen why we both have come here in the company of devas and sages”.
The Purana (पुराण, purāṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.
