Karuṇāsāgara (करुणासागर) refers to the “ocean of mercy”, and is an epithet of Śiva in the Śivapurāṇa 2.2.16. Accordingly as Brahmā narrated to Nārada:—“[...] O sage, when we were asked by Śiva thus, I, the grandfather of the worlds, spoke to Lord Śiva on being prompted by Viṣṇu: [...] O great lord, lord of Devas, O lord, the ocean of mercy (Karuṇāsāgara), please listen why we both have come here in the company of devas and sages”.
