Source: Knowledge Traditions & Practices of India: Language and Grammar (shiksha)Īṣatsaṃvṛta (ईषत्संवृत, “fricative”) refers to a type of bāhyaprayatna (“external effort”) of articulation (uccāraṇa) according to Indian linguistic tradition (viz., śikṣā, ‘phonetics’, vyakaraṇa, ‘grammar’, nirukta, etymology’ and chandas, ‘prosody’.). Īṣatsaṃvṛta (fricative) occurs when the articulator and the places of articulation are brought close together and the air is forced through (for instance, va).
Shiksha (शिक्षा, śikṣā) deals with Sanskrit linguistics and represents a branch of vedanga (vedic ancillary science).
