Ghaṭikāchāyā (घटिकाछाया) refers to the “shadow of one ghaṭikā”, according to Bhāskara’s commentary on the Āryabhaṭīya.—Accordingly, “'[...] ‘It is only a rough method (sthūlaḥ kalpaḥ) to say that the one-sixtieth part of the water that has been discharged in the course of a nychthemeron is the measure of one ghaṭikā. The more accurate method is to measure the ghaṭikā by marking the shadow of one ghaṭikā [i.e., ghaṭikāchāyā], cast by a gnomon of specified shape that has been set up on a level ground. The perforation in [the bowl of] the ghaṭikā-yantra should be made skilfully according to the period measured by the shadow.’ [...]”.
