General definition (in Hinduism)

Source: Cambridge Companion to Greek Mythology: Hesiod and Greek Myth

Genos (‘race’; γένος).—This word -genos - is one that, in some of its uses, has no comfortable equivalent in present-day English. In the translation of lines 190 and 191 above, I have rendered it by English ‘genes’ (and not only forthe etymological connection). It is a word of great antiquity, existing already in Proto-Indo-European *ĝenh,-os, leaving descendants not only in Greek, but in Latin (genus ‘birth, origin, race, class’) and Sanskrit (janas- ‘race’) as well.
