General definition (in Jainism)
Source: academia.edu: Tessitori Collection ICyāramaṃgala (च्यारमंगल) is the name of a work by Ṛṣi Jaymalla dealing with the Āvaśyaka section of Jain Canonical literature.—The Cyāramaṃgala is included in the collection of manuscripts at the ‘Vincenzo Joppi’ library, collected by Luigi Pio Tessitori during his visit to Rajasthan between 1914 and 1919.—This manuscript of the Cyāramaṃgala starts directly with the treatment of the second maṅgala, without any introductory verse. The later addition in the left margin provides one: this verse is almost the same as the verse introducing the complete work by Jayamalla in the printed edition. The section on the second maṅgala (Siddha) has 16 verses, ending on 1r22. Section 3 (Sādha = Sādhu ‘Jain monks’) ends on 2v7 and has 44 verses. Section 4, where the traditional wording is used to designate the fourth maṅgala, ‘the law taught by the omniscient one’, has 60 verses. This section is incomplete: the fifth vow, aparigraha, and abstaining from eating at night, have not been dealt with.
Jainism is an Indian religion of Dharma whose doctrine revolves around harmlessness (ahimsa) towards every living being. The two major branches (Digambara and Svetambara) of Jainism stimulate self-control (or, shramana, ‘self-reliance’) and spiritual development through a path of peace for the soul to progess to the ultimate goal.
