cautha (चौथ).—f (caturthī S) The fourth lunar day. cauthī- cā candra pāhaṇēṃ (To see the fourth-day-moon.) To be visited with some accusation or affliction. (The moon of this date, if looked upon or casually seen, brings calamity.) 2 C In weighing butter. A weight of forty-eight śivarāī. 3 (For cauthāī) An assignment equal, nominally, to one-fourth of the tanakhā, but, generally, to about one-fourth of the Government-collections, obtained from the Muhammadan territories by the Maraṭhas. The Maraṭhas collected it, and divided it as follows. One-fourth, or twenty-five per cent., was appropriated by the head of the Maraṭha state, and was called rājabābatī; from the remainder, termed mōkāsā, there was deducted a sum equal to six per cent. (sāhōtrā) of the whole cautha, and this was assigned to the pantasaciva. The remainder, equal to sixty-nine per cent. of the cautha, termed ainamō- kāsā, was partitioned, on certain conditions, among the Sirdars. In some districts there was, besides the sāhōtrā a sum equal to three per cent. on the whole cautha deducted from the mōkāsā, and named nāḍagauṇḍā. Very numerous subdivisions of the cautha have since been made.
