Bhrājakapitta (भ्राजकपित्त):—A Sanskrit technical term referring to “lustre”, it is one of the five upadoṣa (sub functions) of Pitta (one of the three doṣas). A doṣa is a basic component of life. The compound Bhrājakapitta is composed of the words Bhrājaka (‘shining’) and Pitta (‘fire’). These terms are used throughout Ayurvedic literature such as the Caraka-saṃhitā and the Suśruta-saṃhitā. Āyurveda is India’s classical science of medicine.

Bhrājaka Pitta:—As is known, pigmentation of skin is under the control of some hormones like Adrenocorticotropic hormone & Melanocyte-stimulating hormone from anterior pituitary. Some enzymes in the skin responsible for the metabolism of certain drugs applied topi cally also can be considered under ‘Bhrājaka Pitta’ along with the hormones controlling pigmentation.
