Source: SOAS University of London: Protective Rites in the Netra TantraAstrayāga (अस्त्रयाग) refers to the “sacrifice of the weapons” ([i.e., ‘preparing the weapons for sacrifice’ ?]), according to the Netratantra of Kṣemarāja: a Śaiva text from the 9th century in which Śiva (Bhairava) teaches Pārvatī topics such as metaphysics, cosmology, and soteriology.—Accordingly, [verse 19.105cd-106ab, while describing the ritual that protect the king and his kingdom]—“The [Mantrin takes] should take great pains to prepare the weapons for sacrifice (astrayāga) [which brings about] siddhis. He obtains success with weapons [i.e., victory in battle]. He [who commissions the sacrifice] attains the fruit [of victory]”.
Shaiva (शैव, śaiva) or Shaivism (śaivism) represents a tradition of Hinduism worshiping Shiva as the supreme being. Closely related to Shaktism, Shaiva literature includes a range of scriptures, including Tantras, while the root of this tradition may be traced back to the ancient Vedas.
