(-tam) An uneducated mode of laughing, a manner in which low people would laugh, as ‘with tears coming into the eyes’ (‘nīcānāmapahasitam…apahasitaṃ sāsrākṣam’); mentioned in Rhetoric as one of the vyabhicāribhāvāḥ or accessory conditions of the Comic (or hāsyarasa). Comp. apahāsa. E. apa and hasita.
