Akakkūttu means “to express by gesture and dancing”, as defined in Cilappatikāram: an ancient epic authored by Ilango Adigal representing an important piece of Tamil literature.—S. V. Subramaniyan (translator of the Cilappatikāram) writes about the details of the dance master. Subramaniyan says that the dance master had knowledge of akakkūttu (to express by gesture and dancing) and puṟakūttu (a kind of dance), their grammatical structure and various aspects. He had an understanding of the sixteen kūttus from alliyam to koṭukkōṭṭi and their various inner divisions.
